Real Madrid v Atlético Madrid, Tuesday
There will be no repeat of the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals, though at least one side from Madrid is sure of a place on the grand stage for the third time in four years. http://www.officialcanadiensauthentic.com/Al_Montoya_Jersey Real Madrid are aiming to make Champions League history and retain their crown, having broken the record for consecutive semi-final appearances (seven) by successfully navigating their way past Bayern Munich, albeit in controversial circumstances.
Zinedine Zidane’s men have the welcome distraction of a title race but the Champions League is once again their top priority this season. Atlético also have a battle on their hands in the league, where they are trying to hold off Sevilla and secure a third-place finish and a spot in next season’s Champions League group stage, but winning this tie is also their main goal.
The two teams are in extremely similar shape in terms of results. They have both won eight of their last 10 games, lost one and drawn one (against each other last month at the Bernabéu). Real Madrid have only beaten Atlético once in their last six meetings at the Bernabéu, but that was in the Champions League. Authentic Alex Galchenyuk Youth Jersey They will be glad to see Cristiano Ronaldo return to form. He scored five goals in the quarter-finals against Bayern and was on the scoresheet against Valencia at the weekend. Ronaldo scored a hat-trick when these sides met at the Vicente Calderón in November and will fancy competing against Atlético’s young, makeshift right-back Lucas Hernández.
Monaco v Juventus, Wednesday
A game billed as the best attack in Europe against the best defence in Europe. The lower quality of Ligue 1 defences has helped Monaco score a remarkable 95 goals in 34 league games, Authentic Andrew MacDonald Womens Jersey but they put six past Manchester City in the last-16 stage and another six past Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals, so should should not be underestimated.
No one is questioning Juventus’ credentials after they beat Barcelona with room to spare in the quarter-finals. They kept two clean sheets against Barcelona and have only conceded two goals in the competition all season. But, if anyone can ruin that record, then surely it’s neutrals favourites Monaco.
This is a game of great intrigue, orchestrated by two of the continent’s most sought after managers, both of whom have silenced critics in recent years. When Massimiliano Allegri joined Juventus in 2014 his appointment was seen as uninspiring but the former Milan boss has elevated Juve to another level since replacing Antonio Conte. http://www.officialflyersteamonline.com/Bernie_Parent_Jersey Leonardo Jardim, meanwhile, was thought of as a pragmatic, organised coach but has flipped that reputation on its head by building one of the most exciting young teams seen in many years. All eyes will be on Kylian Mbappé and Paulo Dybala after their performances in the quarter-finals, and the prospect of seeing the pair on the same field is enough to tune in on Wednesday.
Manchester United are the favourites to lift the trophy but they are in desperate shape at the back. Luke Shaw and, more pertinently, Eric Bailly were both forced off during a disappointing 1-1 draw with Swansea at the weekend, and while the latter is only a doubt, it could mean Matteo Darmian is forced to cover alongside Daley Blind at centre-back.

From a business perspective, it was not hard to understand why West Ham United found it impossible to resist the allure of the London Stadium, with its agreeably large capacity, vast corporate facilities, Andrew Miller Youth Jersey proximity to the capital’s centre and Olympic legacy. It seemed to tick all the boxes for a club looking to reach the next level, as long as everyone kept in mind the football team that was going to play there. They would have to feel as comfortable as those sitting in the posh seats. After almost a year in their new home, they don’t.
West Ham’s players have played ball in public, obligingly telling the world about what a thrill it is to play in such a wonderful, modern stadium, even though they have suffered some humiliations there this season. The truth is different in private, where the brave faces disappear and the grumbling begins. Slaven Bilic’s team feel so uneasy in the stadium one senior player describes the Stratford experience as “terrible”.
The obvious counter to such complaints is West Ham have a poor home record because they are a poor team led by an average manager. In normal circumstances, that would be enough. West Ham endured enough ordeals at Upton Park to know a stadium’s power is limited. True, http://www.authenticyankeeshop.com/...hentic-46-andy-pettitte-jersey.html Manchester City have hit nine without reply on their two visits to the London Stadium, Arsenal won 5-1 and even Astra Giurgiu came away with a 1-0 victory that led to the Romanian underdogs qualifying for the Europa League, but what’s new? When West Ham were relegated in 2003, they did not win at Upton Park until the end of January.
There is finite value to be gained from romanticising Upton Park. The atmosphere could be damagingly poisonous, the facilities were tired and the transport links dismal. It held 35,000 and West Ham made £26.9m in matchday revenue last season. Ben Revere Youth Jersey The London Stadium holds 57,000 and West Ham are seeking permission to increase its capacity to 66,000. Supporters with open minds simply had to do the maths to understand the board’s position and accept this was West Ham’s chance to take on Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur on a stronger financial footing.
Those who are less certain can expect West Ham’s vice-chair, Karren Brady, to point to 52,000 season-ticket holders, 10,000 under-16s who regularly attend matches, 36,000 members and a waiting list for season tickets that stretches to 55,000. She is also proud of the club’s rise to 18th in the Deloitte Money League after turning over £144m in 2016. Season ticket prices have been frozen.
The numbers are impressive. Yet where there was excitement last August, by October there was cynicism over slapdash summer signings, stewarding and ticketing problems, an increasingly lacklustre atmosphere, http://www.officialnationalshop.com...thentic-14-chris-heisey-jersey.html violence inside and outside the ground and the awkward sight of large pockets of empty seats during some games. Post-match queues for trains at Stratford have tested even the mildest of tempers, which definitely was not in the brochure.
It would all be easier for supporters to stomach if the team were in better shape. There have been flashes of promise – Andy Carroll’s overhead kick against Crystal Palace, the League Cup win over Chelsea in October – but the experience has been disappointing overall. Having challenged for Champions League qualification in their smaller, traditional ground last season, West Ham have flirted with relegation this time. Fifteenth with three matches left, they could still be relegated. The London Stadium move was not made with the Championship in mind.
West Ham will be fortunate to survive another year of this. They host Tottenham on Friday and Liverpool next Sunday. Lose both matches and they will end the season with six home wins, four draws and nine defeats, having lost three times in the league at Upton Park last season.

There will not be any tears in the eyes of Eoin Morgan when he tosses up with his old sparring partner, William Porterfield, at Bristol on Friday or on Sunday at Lord’s, where they both started their professional careers a dozen years ago.
Back then Morgan was a novice on Middlesex’s books – and they saw a lot more of him in St John’s Wood in those days than they do now. Authentic Andrew MacDonald Womens Jersey Porterfield, meanwhile, was on the Lord’s groundstaff. Even as young men they were old mates since they had played under-13s cricket together in Ireland.
Steely-eyed Morgan is famously clinical in his analysis. For him a match against Ireland is “pretty much another game” and he gave short shrift to any notion that he might one day return to Irish colours with an immediate and decisive monosyllable. Morgan, on a whistle-stop trip back to England from India – he goes back next week for two IPL matches – is more interested in the evolution of England’s one-day team and the pursuit of that elusive Champions Trophy in June.
Morgan was clear about England’s plans for their first series against Ireland. http://www.officialflyersteamonline.com/Bernie_Parent_Jersey They have a squad of 14 players but it would be a major surprise if the two men who are not included in the Champions Trophy squad, Steven Finn and Ben Duckett, get a game. “We’ve got David Willey coming back, who’s played Championship cricket, Liam Plunkett is back from a calf injury and Mark Wood has obviously had quite a long, arduous stint back from injury. So getting cricket under those guys’ belts is really important.”
Morgan confirmed that Jonny Bairstow, fresh from cracking 174 for Yorkshire against Durham as an opening batsman, will bat at No5 and that Sam Billings will keep wicket. He went on to explain this does not mean that Billings is number two in the wicketkeeping pecking order for white-ball cricket after Jos Buttler. Dirk Nowitzki Youth Jersey “We have long identified that this is an opportunity to have a look at Sam fulfilling a similar role to that of Jos.” He acknowledged Bairstow would also like to keep and that the Yorkshireman fully understands the situation.
Billings is in danger of becoming the ultimate cricketing supersub. He will bat anywhere, he can keep wicket and Morgan describes him as a “gun” fieldsman. He has done the rounds this winter, not just in the IPL but also the Big Bash and the Pakistan Super league. He is cheerfully realistic about his status with England even if he would like that to change. “As long as I’m playing I can’t be too picky. Just playing is the main thing,” he says.
Billings, who may also return to India depending on the fate of the Delhi Daredevils, made observations about the IPL which must be music to the ears of Andrew Strauss and Morgan. “The best thing about the IPL is you share a dressing room [with big names] and previously in this country we haven’t made one-day cricket a priority,” http://www.mavericksteamonline.com/Harrison_Barnes_Jersey he said. “But now people are petrified of our side. And you only find that out by talking to them. [Ben] Stokes gets a hundred, three man of the match awards. Everyone knows what he can do. Then there is [Chris] Woakes and Buttler. Every single person over there has made contributions and it shows our depth at the moment.”

The story of Justin Fashanu – the world’s first £1m black footballer and Britain’s first openly gay footballer, who killed himself aged 37 in 1998 – makes a moving, challenging, troubling biopic. Authentic Adam Lind Womens Jersey Forbidden Games tells how Justin and his brother John, aged four and three, were removed from their mother and three siblings, to be fostered by Barnardo’s. The more sensitive Justin could never reconcile what he perceived to be an abandonment, but John saw things differently. “No mother wants to give away her own children,” he says, “and it propelled us to become major celebrities all over the world. We made ourselves millionaires, so it couldn’t have been all that bad, could it?”
John’s resulting insecurity manifested itself in shyness and a speech impediment. He clung to Justin, “the only person who could hear what I was talking about … that was part of the bonding of us at a young age”.
Eventually, the brothers were fostered by a white couple in Shropham, Norfolk, where their real mother would visit once a month. They were excited by the opportunity to be part of a family, http://www.officialnationalstore.com/Adam_Eaton_Jersey but the passage was not seamless – John struggled to sleep, so a doctor told his foster mother to hug him tight. “She used to grab me and give me a great big cuddle every morning, every evening, and that gave me a lot of security,” he recalls. “It was a lovely feeling, your whole face disappearing into Mummy’s breasts.”
The boys’ colour made them outsiders in Norfolk. “If you saw a black person,” says John, “that was Michael Jackson’s picture somewhere, and maybe, maybe, if you were lucky, Muhammad Ali … they were the only black people I saw in my life till I got to 18, 19.”
Accordingly, they grew up knowing “nothing about race”; had the 16-year-old John been asked about colour, “I’d have told you I was white because the environment was white.” But his world changed when, Alex Galchenyuk Womens Jersey at the age of 18 and without Justin, he visited Nigeria – his father’s homeland, and now his home. “The plane landed, and for the first time the doors opened and I just saw black people everywhere,” he says. “I was shocked! I thought: ‘Wow, wonderful!’ My own people! My God! Hallelujah! People who look like me! I can walk around the whole of Nigeria free as a black man! That was the beginning of my life as far as I was concerned.”
Meanwhile Justin, though proud, was ambivalent regarding race; principally, http://www.officialcanadiensauthentic.com/Alexander_Radulov_Jersey he wanted to be left alone. Scarred by the childhood trauma from which he had protected John – he endured violent nightmares into adulthood – he was simultaneously vulnerable and charismatic, desperate for acceptance and searching for identity.
Growing up where and when he did, this was not easy. “It was a racist society,” John recalls. “Times have, thank goodness, changed, but they’ve changed on our backs.”

After suffering numerous beatings, the brothers took up boxing and martial arts. The single-minded John became an expert, while the impressionable Justin was dissuaded by those who deemed them dangerous – or, as John sees it: “He was always getting something and dropping it.”
But his footballing excellence was unignorable. “That was the easiest way for us to make money, which we made an awful lot of,” Jarell Martin Womens Jersey says John. “There were no black bankers, lawyers, or anything at all. We knew the only way to make money if you were black was either to sing, dance or play football – that’s it.”
Justin soon carved a niche at Norwich, before signing for Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in 1981. During that time, he developed a taste for big spending and fast living, also making regular appearances in Nottingham’s gay bars. http://www.authenticgrizzliestore.com/Lorenzen_Wright_Jersey Before long, Clough excommunicated him, even calling the police to the training ground on one occasion. Beset by injury, Justin’s career tailed off, while his personal life grew increasingly chaotic and his behaviour increasingly erratic.
John left Norwich in 1983 to escape his more talented brother’s shadow; he was also angry that Justin hadn’t used his influence to help him at the club or elsewhere. The man he saw as “my mother and father”, “my shining light” and “my life” became “my arch enemy”, and their relationship never recovered.
In 1986, John joined Wimbledon, and was a key figure as the Crazy Gang established themselves in the top division before winning the FA Cup in 1988. In 1989, he was picked for England, and in 1990 at the Professional Footballers’ Association dinner, he was accosted in the toilet.
“One of the most famous players, playing for Nottingham Forest, just said to me: ‘Hey, your brother’s gay.’ I’d heard little things, Danny Green Youth Jersey but when he said that, the first thing I was gonna do, I was gonna beat the hell out of him. I was with Vinnie Jones, and it was Vinnie who held me back … I was gonna give him a good slap because I thought he was insulting my brother.”
John, “a red-blooded African man”, did not believe it – until Justin confided in him. Both their mothers were ill, and assuming that Justin was simply after money and attention, John responded angrily. “Right now, we don’t need that,” he said. “I will give you £100,000 if you just keep your mouth shut.”
John was also concerned for himself: “I was worried that people would think it was me. John Fashanu, Justin Fashanu, J and J … I was the hard man, we were hard men, Vinnie Jones, John Fashanu, Dennis Wise, we were the hard team with a macho, strong image, we had a massive following of people who loved the way we played, and suddenly my brother’s coming out and saying this?”
So to “empower” his brother, John wrote a cheque and had his agent take Justin to a hotel, only to discover that “my agent was a gay sympathiser”. In the event, Justin kept John’s money and sold the story to the Sun anyway.
Justin also revealed that he had slept with a married Conservative MP and that they had kissed in the House of Commons. http://www.authenticspurstore.com/David_Lee_Jersey He later retracted the claims – despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary – but John now believes that the liaison never happened.
Nor does he accept the evidence offered by a teammate at Leyton Orient that Justin would arrive at training with “rent boys”, and says that an allegation of raping a minor in the US is untrue; on the other hand, after questioning and blood testing, a warrant was issued for Justin’s arrest on charges of first- and second-degree assault and second-degree sexual assault. But he had already left for England.
The last time the brothers spoke, Justin feared for his liberty, but John, despite now accepting homosexuality as “a normal thing”, was “too annoyed to understand what he was really saying” and did not believe that Justin deserved his unconditional loyalty. “There comes a time when it’s enough help,” he says. “Enough is enough. He was my older brother, not my younger brother. Why am I continually giving him money?” Three days later, John was baptising his son Amir when the police arrived, media in tow, to tell him that his brother had killed himself and asking him to identify the body.

Somehow, at the end of this brutal, seesawing, whirligig of a fight, Anthony Joshua still had the energy to stand on the ring apron, Bernie Parent Youth Jersey revel in the glorious applause of 90,000 people and pound his chest in triumph. The rest of us were left breathless after one of the greatest heavyweight fights in a generation.
Beforehand everyone was playing guessing games about how much Klitschko had left at 41. The last time he had fought, against Tyson Fury in November 2015, he had still looked as sculpted as a Greek statue – but was about as mobile. But here the proud champion, who had been unbeaten in 22 fights over 11 years before facing the fists of Fury, resurfaced with a vengeance. In the end it was age, as much as Joshua, that beat him.
When Michael Buffer announced Joshua’s name Wembley became a carnivorous din. There remains an electricity around a big world heavyweight title fight that is unmatched in sport. The heart quickens. The adrenaline does flipflops. http://www.officialflyersteamonline.com/Bill_Barber_Jersey Something about the impending and unpredictable violence concentrates the mind. It is not just the fighters who have to live each moment. We do too. Having so many people in the stadium only magnified it.
The early rounds were close, and after round four the fighters gave each other a mutual nod of appreciation. And then absolute chaos erupted. Round five will go down as one of the great rounds in heavyweight boxing history, along with the first round of Jack Dempsey against Luis Ángel Firpo, round four of George Foreman against Ron Lyle and round 10 of Riddick Bowe against Evander Holyfield – as Klitschko was put down and almost drummed out before coming back to desperately wound Joshua.
When Joshua’s first blow landed in the fifth a shadow of doubt and pain came across the Ukrainian’s face and he was bleeding under one eye but that was only the start of the barrage. Yet Klitschko clung on, absorbed and recovered to drive back his opponent.
For Joshua the crisis was just beginning. He started round six by telling Klitschko: “You can’t hurt me” – only to be felled for the first time in his career by a thudding right. There were many dangerous moments where it looked as if his IBF, WBA and IBO belts was going to be ripped from his waist. Somehow he survived the round, but he was still unsteady on his feet in round seven.
There have been other major heavyweight contests here and at the old stadium. Harrison Barnes Womens Jersey But nothing this big – or epic. In 1963, 35,000 watched Henry Cooper put Cassius Clay on his pants before Clay’s punches turned his face into a dozen red rivers. And 40,000 saw Bruno bludgeoned by Tim Witherspoon during his first world title attempt in 1986 – the same number who were there when he became WBC champion nine years later with a victory over Oliver McCall. But this was far bigger in crowd size and stature.
The pace naturally slowed for both men needed time to breath and they were not the only ones. Frequently their tired bodies would crash into each other at the same time, like rutting stags. http://www.mavericksteamonline.com/Dirk_Nowitzki_Jersey But slowly Joshua was finding his legs again, while the energy was draining from Klitschko like a leaking battery. And when a right uppercut swivelled him around in the 11th round he lacked the reflexes to escape.

Lewis Hamilton has said he believes his team-mate, Valtteri Bottas, is a genuine contender for the Formula One world championship, Albert Wilson Authentic Jersey after the Finn won the last round in Russia.
Hamilton, speaking before the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, said the form Bottas had shown came as no surprise while insisting their Mercedes team had no intention of favouring either driver in their battle for the title with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
“Of course Bottas is a credible competitor,” the three-times world champion said when asked if he believed the Finn was in the running for the title. http://www.chiefsofficialsauthentic.com/CHIEFS-ALEX-SMITH-JERSEY “He was when he joined. Many came with preconceived ideas of how he was going to perform and he has proved everybody wrong.”
Bottas’s victory was his first in F1 after he claimed his first pole position at the previous race in Bahrain. The 27-year-old achieved it with a calm, mature drive that included maintaining his lead in the closing stages while being chased down by the four-times world champion Vettel. The latter leads Hamilton in the drivers’ championship by 13 points with Bottas 10 points further back.
“Fair play to him, he is going to remain a competitor through the rest of the year so the fight will go on,” said Hamilton. There had been no discussion at Mercedes of one driver ceding to another. “I have not had the chat about backing off because there is no need to,” Hamilton said.
The British driver was fourth in Sochi after an uncharacteristically poor weekend in which he was unable to hook up his car successfully, Alex Rodriguez Youth Jersey struggling with his tyres. Mercedes said they would address the issue as a matter of urgency and Hamilton was hopeful the problem has been solved before the Spanish Grand Prix.
“We have a good understanding of where we went wrong on our side of the garage. There has been a huge amount of analysis so we have definitely grown from the experience, both having a win and a fast car and a car that struggled in so many areas. I can’t say if it is going to be better this weekend. I assume it will be.”
Speaking before his home grand prix at the Circuit de Catalunya, Fernando Alonso issued his starkest warning yet that he may leave McLaren after his contract finishes at the end of this season. http://www.authenticyankeeshop.com/authentic-andrew-miller-jersey.html The team endured two very difficult years after Honda were unable to supply a competitive power unit and 2017 was expected to be a major step forward; but the engine manufacturer is once again way off the pace. Alonso, who has yet to finish a race this season and in Russia did not even reach the grid due to an ERS problem, was unequivocal abouthis future.
“I am happy with the team but we are not winning,” he said. “If from here to September-October we are in a position where we see clearly a possibility to win in 2018, I will be more than happy to stay with the team. If it is not the case, then I will be more than happy to talk to anyone.”
The team have already taken the highly unusual step of allowing the Spaniard to miss the Monaco Grand Prix in order to race in the Indy 500, widely seen as part of the process of keeping their driver on board for the future.
But with the two-times world champion setting deadlines for later in the year, McLaren will require a huge step forward to prove they have anything close to a package that could win races in 2018. Alonso’s options are limited, however; realistically the only team with title-winning potential considered likely to take him on would be Renault, with whom he won his titles in 2005 and 2006.

Then there were two. On Tuesday night inside the giant shiny-plated Armadillo that is the Juventus Stadium, as the lights dazzled and thrillingly loud American brat-rock split a hole in the sky, 10,000 Italians held up 10,000 plastic cards to spell the word “Cardiff” in vast shimmery letters. This is, in all likelihood, the first time this has ever happened, and probably the last too.
A day later in Madrid as thunderstorms cleared the streets after midnight people in the city centre bars could be heard yelling and chanting and, in one side street off the Calle de Toledo, singing with a thick, beery Spanish inflection about Cardiff.
And so on to Cardiff it is then. Another high-grade, pizzazz-ridden, gas-wangling Champions League campaign has boiled down to its final pairing. Al Montoya Womens Jersey No real surprises here. The team that always reaches the final will play the team that sometimes reaches the final. Although, looking at Real Madrid and in particular Juventus one thing does stand out. These are the most seasoned, weathered and manly of Champions League finalists: balding, grizzled and masters of a more stately game compared to the wild collisions of the Premier League.
The big question in Cardiff is can the 32-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo find space between Leonardo Bonucci (30), Giorgio Chiellini (32) and Andrea Barzagli (36) to put one past the 39-year-old Gianluigi Buffon, who made his debut for Italy when Tony Adams and Gazza were still trying to win the World Cup and who still has something unbound and compelling about him, glowering on his goal-line like a wild-eyed evangelical priest in foam gloves and lime green nylon jumper.
It was wonderful to watch that Juventus defence in Turin, men for whom to defend is a kind of muscular physical art, strung together across the pitch like a Renaissance frieze of a particularly heroic battlefield massacre. Chiellini in particular, http://www.officialcanadiensauthentic.com/Alex_Galchenyuk_Jersey with his noble, beaky profile, resembles a huge, sad medieval ivory chess piece come to life and crammed into a black and white striped shirt. They really are going to look good holding up that trophy three weeks from now.
Which is what plenty of people seem to think will happen in Cardiff. The theory, wishful thinking or not, is that Juventus will get a grip of Madrid, reining in the fancy boys, placing a pair of fleshy hands on the lapels of that precision attack.
It is an exciting idea that overlooks one thing. Atlético Madrid tried the same tactics and indeed succeeded for 20 minutes on Wednesday night. That they didn’t succeed in squeezing Real into submission was down to the efforts, above all, of another 30-something, Bernie Parent Womens Jersey a slight, ferrety, gliding presence who is surely, and without undue fanfare, the best all-round midfielder in the world these days. All hail, once again, the wonderful Luka Modric.
What a performance Modric produced at the Vicente Calderón. At the start he had to snap and snipe and wrestle as Atlético swarmed through the holes in this occasionally misshapen Real team. By the hour mark Modric was running the game in more elegant ways, reeling out the full range of his wonderfully complete set of skills, http://www.officialflyersteamonline.com/Bill_Barber_Jersey the instant control, the ability to hold the ball in any space, to jink and pass and set the rhythms of the game around him. Over 90 minutes he had 103 touches, more than anyone else on the pitch. He had the most dribbles. He made the most interceptions. His final heat map looks like a massive fungal omelette spread across an entire griddle pan.

It isn’t difficult to understand why there are times when Real Madrid, with all their haughty self‑importance and the inescapable sense that they always seem to get their way, leave some of the other clubs at the higher end of the sport filled with moments of insecurity.
There are plenty of other great clubs who regard European domination as a legitimate ambition. Andy Pettitte Youth Jersey Yet none, perhaps – not even Barcelona – have the same kind of magnetic attraction for the game’s superstars. None of the other superpowers seem so sure of themselves, bordering on a superiority complex, when it comes to luring their targets. No other club take more pleasure from flexing their muscles and reminding everyone about the order of merit that exists among the elite.
“Madrid paid £80m in cash, and do you know why,” Sir Alex Ferguson writes of Cristiano Ronaldo in his last autobiography. “It was a way for Florentino Pérez, their president, to say to the world: ‘We are Real Madrid, we are the biggest of the lot.’ It was a clever move.”
Ferguson, you might recall, was so incensed by Madrid’s pursuit of Ronaldo throughout the preceding year that he brought up the fascist dictatorship of General Franco to argue his point that one of the great sporting institutions was, in fact, morally bankrupt. http://www.authenticyankeeshop.com/authentic-andrew-miller-jersey.html Ferguson’s press conferences around that time presented the image of a man who refused to be cowed, leaning forward in his chair and promising he would “not sell a virus” to “that mob”. Ferguson, perhaps the greatest actor football has ever produced, struck a pose that day that Al Pacino would have been proud of. But it was all for show. Secretly, there was a gentleman’s agreement with Ronaldo, he just didn’t admit it until a few years later. “I knew full well that if they produced the £80m he would have to go. We could not block his fervent wish to return to Iberia and wear the famous white shirt of Di Stéfano or Zidane.” And Madrid, once again, got their man.
This is the problem for United now the relevant people at the Bernabéu have realigned their sights on David de Gea, even if it is also true the goalkeeper spent his early football years at the Vicente Calderón, home of Atlético Madrid, where the tribuna lateral held up thousands of red and white cards before their latest encounter with Real to make its point in a huge, defiant mosaic: Orgulloso De No Ser Como Vosotros. Translation: Proud of not being like you.
It was a nice put-down and that kaleidoscope of colour, with the Almudena cathedral on the skyline, was a wonderful reminder why the old place will be missed when Atlético upgrade this summer to their new stadium out by the airport.
The bottom line, however, is that it was Zinedine Zidane’s players who finished the night doing knee-slides on the rain-soaked pitch. The club where Jorge Valdano once said you could never have too many stars even have a galáctico managing them now. Authentic Ben Revere Youth Jersey They have won the European Cup 11 times, four more than Milan and six ahead of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool on the next rung down, and los blancos could add another when they meet Juventus in Cardiff on 3 June. If so, it will be the third time in four years that Madrid’s ribbons have adorned that 17lb hulk of silver. Of course De Gea must be intrigued. Of course there are temptations. How, possibly, could anyone think there are not?
That must be an alarming prospect for United if the club are serious about re-establishing themselves among the elite and Chelsea are probably entitled to a few concerns of their own when Madrid have also been fluttering their eyelashes in Eden Hazard’s direction.
Madrid might be a chaotic place sometimes – six managers and more crises than they will probably care to remember during David Beckham’s four years at the Bernabéu – but this is still the nearest football has to the Harlem Globetrotters. http://www.officialnationalshop.com...thentic-14-chris-heisey-jersey.html Or as the headline in USA Today once put it: the Yankees of Soccer. It isn’t easy for any player to say no.

And, breathe again. After an extended, processional run-in that started as a head-down sprint away from the peloton and settled into an imperious push from the front, Chelsea are once again champions of the Premier League. Bernie Parent Womens Jersey Friday night’s crowning victory at The Hawthorns was the 25th in 30 league matches since Antonio Conte’s decisive re-gearing of his team in September, the tactical switches that have coaxed such a thrilling run from this team of bolt-ons and upcycled squad players, most notably Victor Moses, who was dredged out of the laundry bin in the autumn to become a key part of the title surge.
This feels like a significant league title in more ways than one. It is now 14 years since Roman Abramovich emerged as an spendthrift presence in west London. Five titles and a Champions League win have now sealed Chelsea’s place as the dominant English club of that period. For all the glories of the Ferguson end-game, Manchester City’s rise and Arsenal’s unflinching desire to finish in the top four and occasionally win the FA Cup, this is now Chelsea’s mini-era.
Not to mention confirmation if any were needed of elite English football’s main subtext since the turn of the century, the transformational dominance of overseas billionaire investment. http://www.officialflyersteamonline.com/Andrew_Macdonald_Jersey Just as significant in the long term, Chelsea were also granted permission this season for their new on-site mega-stadium, a 60,000-seat upgrade that will mean the current Stamford Bridge is razed and replaced by something that looks like a vast alien space yurt made of giant Martian redwood stems.
It is another pointer toward Abramovich’s vast capital expenditure. But also a firm move towards the oft-promised sustainable future. Such talk chimes with the season just past and with Conte’s own kitchen-sink achievement in taking a team with net spend of £20m this season to a dominant league title.
It is Conte’s part in this that shines through, not just as an example of ruthlessly detailed coaching and man management, but as something new also. Authentic Harrison Barnes Womens Jersey There have been 11 changes of manager during that run of Chelsea trophies, with the implication always that the structures and hierarchy are what really keep this club rolling on.
In Conte Chelsea have something different, a manager who inherited a messy, enervated squad fresh from the worst title defence in 25 years and threw a lightning bolt through pretty much the same group of players to create a fresh champion team.
Conte has broken the mould further with the suggestion he might escape the Abramovich cleaver, becoming the first of his line to leave by his own volition. Those recurrent noises in Italy about a move to Internazionale have resurfaced this week. It seems overwhelmingly likely Conte will stay, pay rise pending. But it is a feat of rare political skill to have made himself so unusually vital to the current success.
How has he done it? Attention has focused on the much-celebrated switch to playing a back three after the defeats by Liverpool and Arsenal in September. http://www.mavericksteamonline.com/Harrison_Barnes_Jersey Chelsea were crunching about in reverse gear at the time. Reports have suggested senior management were underwhelmed by performances. Conte had arrived a week early despite spending his summer with Italy at the Euros. Exhausted, he went home during the international break to see his family and brood. On his return the team that faced Hull City had been reconfigured. Moses wasn’t overly drilled, just told he would be playing right wing-back, that Conte had seen enough to know.

Back in early October, when the world hung on two momentous decisions – the one soon to face American voters, the other tormenting a 10-year-old Sydney schoolboy named Yoshi – the 2016-17 A-League season bolted from the gates as if slapped on the rump.
Boosted by an A-League record crowd of 61,880 at the Sydney derby, round one saw the highest single-round attendance (106,365) in A-League history and David Gallop was understandably delighted. Knowing a spruiking opportunity when he sees one, Authentic Bryant Reeves Womens Jersey Football Federation Australia’s CEO predicted the momentum would continue into round two with Tim Cahill’s long-awaited, much-discussed A-League debut for City in the Melbourne derby.
And how it did. In front of 43,188 at Docklands, Cahill led City to a stunning 4-1 win over Victory after opening the scoring with a mantelpiece-worthy 35-metre half-volley of such timeliness that pundits speculated whether Cahill had, with one sweep of his right foot, justified – if not repaid – the $4m spent by FFA and City to secure his services as the league’s marquee player. If there was anyone happier than Cahill at Docklands that night it would have been Gallop. “We’ve got further talks with TV networks this week [about a new TV deal] and while it’s early days, a goal like that from Tim Cahill couldn’t come at a better time,” said Gallop who might well have left the stadium that night with a spring in his step as he fished in his pocket for his car keys.
Seven months later, as Americans search for North Korea on a map and as Yoshi looks for a get-out clause in his City promissory note, http://www.officialgrizzliestore.co...entic-34-brandan-wright-jersey.html it seems reasonable to suggest that despite its compelling finale, the A-League season failed to live up to its early promise. It wasn’t just that a stellar Sydney won the premiership by the length of the straight, which took away a good deal of suspense and, arguably, gave to the second half of the season the same clock-slowing feel of a long layover in an airport transit lounge. Outside of this there was also an undercurrent of discontent that lapped at the game’s ankles and now seems to be heading towards its knees.
Set against stagnating TV ratings and attendances across the league – even at Cahill’s Melbourne City, even at Sydney FC, where a baffled Graham Arnold issued a plea, in February, for more support from Sydneysiders – many opined that the A-League’s 10-team format has gone stale. Authentic Andrelton Simmons Womens Jersey New teams are desperately needed, they said, to shake things up if the A-League is to make the most of football’s massive participation rate at club level. Moreover, calls for “promotion and relegation” have become a kind of incantation from the progressives who want real change.
Meanwhile, and most significantly, FFA came under pressure this season from world governing body Fifa to change its governance model and the makeup of its congress; a change that will potentially give the A-League clubs more decision-making powers. http://www.officialangelsproshop.com/Albert_Pujols_Jersey FFA has agreed to overhaul its congress but, as yet, despite a 31 March Fifa-imposed deadline, and despite a number of fractious meetings between FFA and key stakeholders – which include nine state and territory-based federations, the newly formed Association of Australian Football Clubs (the representative body of National Premier League clubs), and Professional Footballers Australia – consensus has yet to be achieved.
Forget Jordy Buijs’ hairstyle, forget Ange Postecoglou’s vigorous sweat glands, the governance of the game in Australia has become the biggest issue in football and until it’s sorted out it’s hard to see football casting off its much-touted “sleeping giant” status to become, as has so often been predicted, the dominant professional sport in Australia.

The club where Jorge Valdano once said you could never have too many stars even have a galáctico managing them now. There is, however, no rule in place that dictates other clubs must dance to their tune and it would be a pity if United and Chelsea do not have the will to stand up to Madrid at a time when the Premier League needs these kind of players and Match of the Day, http://www.chiefsofficialsauthentic.com/CHIEFS-ALLEN-BAILEY-JERSEY a show with natural urges to make the sport feel exciting, had a debate recently about whether England’s top division had lost its stardust.
Chelsea, to give them their due, have already made their intentions clear. Hazard might have finished behind N’Golo Kanté when it comes to the season’s individual honours but the Belgian would have been a worthy recipient of the footballer-of-the-year awards. He would be an ideal wearer of Madrid’s colours and it makes perfect sense that Chelsea, with high ambitions of their own, have already initiated talks about replacing his existing contract, which runs until 2020, with a longer one that would reinforce his position as the club’s highest‑paid player.

A team does not necessarily need a title to show their class, although Tottenham Hotspur do crave one. Spurs demonstrated their excellence at the King Power by swatting aside last season’s champions with regal aplomb and, Anthony RendonAuthentic Jersey in the process, Harry Kane struck four goals to enhance his chances of being crowned as the Premier League’s top scorer for the second season in a row. His tally for the campaign stands at 26, two more than Everton’s Romelu Lukaku with one round of matches to go. Spurs cannot catch Chelsea but they have no intention of stopping their glory hunt.
Son Heung-min contributed to the rout here by scoring Tottenham’s other two goals. That amounted to six damaging blows to Craig Shakespeare’s prospects of landing the Leicester managerial job on a permanent basis. Ben Chilwell scored for the home team but that was no consolation to their caretaker manager. “There are no positives,” said Shakespeare. “We were totally second-best.”
Shakespeare should not be judged too harshly on this performance, as the main cause of this thrashing was Tottenham’s exceptional slickness – and their encouraging bloodlust. http://www.officialnationalstore.com/Adam_Eaton_Jersey Mauricio Pochettino had demanded his team maintain their high standards despite the title being beyond them. They had faded at a similar stage last season once Leicester got beyond their reach so the Argentinian wanted to see evidence of a positive evolution since then. His wish was granted, and this time Leicester were left looking like a rabble.
“Our attitude and internal motivation was good,” said Pochettino. “We have been talking a lot about why we finished so badly last season. This type of performance shows that the team is improving and has learned a lot from last season. This is fantastic.”
Leicester made the better start but began to tremble as soon as Spurs bared their teeth. That was the beginning of a nightmare for Yohan Benalouane, in particular, as the centre-back was made to look ditzy by Spurs’ artful attackers. Especially Kane. The striker threatened to open the scoring a couple of times before he eventually did so in the 25th minute.
Toby Alderweireld exposed flat-footedness in Leicester’s rejigged defence by dropping a long pass over them from deep inside his own half. Christian Fuchs, a makeshift centre-back, failed to cut it out and Benalouane undermined the offside scheme. Son took advantage, scampering on to the ball before playing a square pass to Kane, who scored from close range.
Spurs began to run amok. They increased their lead 11 minutes later with a sumptuous goal, an intricate move culminating with Dele Alli scooping the ball over the head of Benalouane before Son swept a volley into the net from 10 yards.
At half-time Shakespeare had to find a way to stop the bleeding, at least. He introduced Islam Slimani for Shinji Okazaki and Leicester made a strong start to the second period. Authentic Al Montoya Womens Jersey In the 59th minute their revolt gathered momentum when Chilwell scored with impressive composure. Hugo Lloris had rushed out of his box to intercept a pass to Jamie Vardy but Leicester kept possession and when the ball was played to Chilwell, the 20-year-old sidestepped a defender and stroked it into the net from 12 yards despite Eric Dier’s attempt to clear off the line.
Belief in a home comeback lasted four minutes. That is how long it took Spurs to re-establish their superiority. Alderweireld cantered down the right and floated a cross to the back post, where Victor Wanyama headed it back across to Kane, who nodded in from two yards. Eight minutes later Son struck again, ridiculing Wilfred Ndidi at the edge of the box before sweeping a low shot into the net. The uprising had been quashed with imperious style.
Kane was not finished. He had his eyes on a personal prize as well as an emphatic team triumph. He rifled in a low 20-yard shot to complete his hat-trick, then fired in his fourth in time added on. http://www.officialcanadiensauthentic.com/Alex_Galchenyuk_Jersey That was the first four-goal haul of his career and he admitted he was driven by his pursuit of Lukaku at the top of the scoring charts.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t,” he said. “I was looking to take it into the last game, but now I’m in the driving seat. I’m not resting on my laurels, and I’ll go to Hull [on Sunday] looking to get four more hopefully.

Players who dive or feign injury could face two-match suspensions from the start of next season after the Football Association voted in favour of introducing retrospective bans.
The new offence of “successful deception of a match official” is based on a law already used in Scotland and was approved at the FA’s annual general meeting at Wembley.
Incidents will be reviewed by a panel comprising a former manager, an ex-player and former referee, who will watch the footage independently. If they are unanimous in believing a player deceived a match official, the sanction will be a two-match ban.
This process is similar to the one already used for red-card offences which were missed at the time but caught on camera, and the cases will be fast-tracked.
The FA said: “Although attempts to deceive the referee by feigning injury or pretending to have been fouled is a cautionable offence for unsporting behaviour, Authentic Bryant Reeves Womens Jersey the fact that the act of simulation has succeeded in deceiving a match official and, therefore, led to a penalty and/or dismissal, justifies a more severe penalty which would act as a deterrent.”
If a player admits to a charge of successfully deceiving an official, or is found to have done so, any yellow or red card given to an opposing player, http://www.authenticgrizzliestore.com/Brandan_Wright_Jersey as a result of the deceit, can be rescinded. The new rule will apply across English football and has been supported by the English Football League, the League Managers Association, the Premier League and the Professional Footballers’ Association.
There have been a number of notable cases of simulation this season, including Robert Snodgrass’s dive to earn a penalty for Hull City against Crystal Palace and other alleged incidents involving Leroy Sané, Dele Alli and Marcus Rashford.
The Scottish Football Association introduced its “rule 201” in 2011 and spent several years trying to convince Fifa that it was not going too far in taking decision-making away from officials on the day – something world football’s governing body has traditionally been very reluctant to do.
The reaction to the news was mainly positive, although Sam Allardyce described the decision as “utter rubbish”. The Crystal Palace manager said: “Bring technology in, let us look at it on the day, Authentic Danny Green Youth Jersey and then bring a sin-bin in so we can put him in that for 10 minutes and then put him back on. Stop paying all these people money to do rubbish situations in the game. That’s utter rubbish.”
However, recent moves to introduce goalline technology and video assistant referees indicate that even Fifa realises match officials need more help and supporters want better decisions.
With England and Scotland having permanent seats on Fifa’s law-making body, the International Football Association Board, bans for divers could soon become a worldwide policy.
The retrospective punishment has not eradicated diving in Scotland since it was introduced in 2011 but it has occasionally provided some semblance of justice.
The Rangers winger Sone Aluko, now at Fulham, became the first player to be punished in December 2011 after winning a penalty against Dunfermline but Ally McCoist, Rangers’ manager at the time, http://www.authenticspurstore.com/Bruce_Bowen_Jersey raged against the decision, saying: “The three gentlemen on the panel have effectively called my player a cheat and a liar, neither of which he is.”

The Football Association has ratified the modest reforms proposed to its governing council and board, so mercifully drawing to a finish a torturous and long‑winded saga of internal reordering. Bryce Harper Youth Jersey The immediate consequence is that the FA’s structure and makeup of its board, which will have three women and seven men by next year, complies with the – also modest – requirements of the new official code for sports governance.
This means that several unlikely threats made to the FA – and by the chairman, Greg Clarke, to resign if he did not deliver the reforms – will not be fulfilled. The FA will qualify for the £30m in lottery money it receives from Sport England for grassroots programmes, whose possible removal was dangled if it resisted reform. The sports minister, Tracey Crouch, will not be proceeding with the threat to knock the FA into shape by law, which she made a little reluctantly at a select committee hearing in December, and which seemed as unrealistic as all the previous government threats to legislate for football made over the last 20 years. A vote by 17 MPs in February for a motion of no-confidence in the FA’s ability to reform, proposed by the campaigning Conservative MP Damian Collins, will now be seen as premature. For a parliamentary statement which should have felt momentous, berating the 154‑year‑old founding body of the world’s most popular sport, it will be lucky to make the footnotes in a history of the game.
The important question, though, is whether the reforms, and a slightly more 20th-century FA, will do much to address the concerns raised by the MPs who bothered to attend that debate. They reeled off the list familiar from supporters’ campaigns ever since the 1992 Premier League breakaway and the then government’s Football Task Force, http://www.officialnationalshop.com/authentic-ben-revere-jersey.html set up five years later. It and subsequent inquiries have criticised the glaring financial inequality driven between the Premier League and the rest of football, the comparison with dire public football facilities, governance failures, destructive or dodgy owners and the prices charged to supporters to loyally follow their team.
The FA reforms, which were already passed by the council last month, are not really aimed at answering any of those fundamental questions about the soul or even direction of football. It was a matter of complying with the code, whose development was initiated by Crouch and is now overseen by Sport England as a condition of funding. One or two FA council members from the political-correctness-gone-mad tendency, indignant about supposed government interference, floated the idea that football is so rich it can do without the £30m, but they were cajoled, soothed and brought into line by Clarke and some other diplomacy.
The code itself has been the subject of fierce criticism from Lord Herman Ouseley, chair of the anti-discrimination campaign Kick It Out, who derided it as “pathetic” and the FA’s reforms as a “sham” when they were unveiled. His issue is that while the code sets as a requirement “a minimum of 30% of each gender on its board”, http://www.officialgiantsfootballs.com/Bobby-Rainey-Jersey-Cheap" target="_blank">Bobby Rainey Authentic Jersey its standard for ethnic and other diversity is vague. Each sports governing body is only asked to “demonstrate a strong and public commitment to progressing towards achieving gender parity and greater diversity generally on its board, including, but not limited to, Black, Asian, minority ethnic (BAME) diversity, and disability”.
So after the parliamentary excitements, renegade council members and Clarke’s potential offer of his chairmanship, the reforms amount essentially to three women out of 10 on the board, and 11 new members of the council, swelling its numbers to a not very wieldy looking 131.
Among those new members will be one more football supporter representative, doubling their presence to two, and further BAME and disability representatives. The council will still be overwhelmingly white male pensioners, many of whom have given sterling service to football, and no anachronisms from the FA’s public school, http://www.officialgiantsfootballs.com/Carl-Banks-Jersey-Cheap" target="_blank">http://www.offici...lls.com/Carl-Banks-Jersey-Cheap Oxbridge history will lose their seats. Clarke himself acknowledged the limits of the changes, saying: “This is a good start but we don’t just want to be compliant with the Sport England code for sports governance – we want to go beyond that. Our aim is to make English football for all and a more inclusive and diverse game.”

The sun burned, Champions League hopes evaporated and all of a sudden the lightning rod for Arsenal supporters’ disillusionment moved away from the man in the dugout and out towards the Atlantic. The chant started in the North Bank and suddenly spread, growing in urgency as it coursed round the stadium: “Stan Kroenke – get out of our club.”
The news that broke last week about Alisher Usmanov’s $1.3bn bid for the majority shareholding held by Arsenal’s American investor has broadened the conversation about the club’s status and ambitions. Adam Duvall Authentic Jersey While the disaffected have generally pointed their fingers at Arsène Wenger the club’s direction above and beyond the manager is now under scrutiny. Kroenke is expected in England next week before the FA Cup final. The microscope is not something he welcomes but the lens will inevitably focus in. The Kroenke model across his sports franchises tends not to reach for the stars and Arsenal’s fanbase want a say about that.
The Wenger debate appears – for now at least – to have quietened. For all the huff and puff about the consequences of finally slipping out of the Champions League reckoning, in the end the mood around the Emirates was mild and accepting. http://www.authenticcincinnatireds.com/Anthony-Desclafani-Jersey There was not a hint from the home crowd there might be a final curtain any time soon for the manager who has called the shots for two decades. The impression was of a crowd expecting to see him back in situ for the Emirates Cup in July.
Wenger normally joins in the traditional lap of appreciation but this time he stayed on the sideline, watching from the edge of the pitch as his players waved and absorbed good wishes before Wembley. He thought it best to keep his distance just in case it was a bit of a distraction – and his players have had enough of that to deal with.
His downcast disposition after the match suggested that deep down he feels troubled that his proud record of consecutive Champions League qualifications is over, Alcides Escobar Womens Jersey in terms of what it represents as a status symbol as well as the obvious lament that Thursday nights and far-flung travel are never ideal crammed into an already busy schedule. Round these parts they used mockingly to call them “Spursday nights” and now this is their domain.
Wenger said he felt sad and that it was strange to imagine life without the Champions League soundtrack. The last time Arsenal finished a league campaign without that particular prize was in 1997. Their final game was at the now-defunct Baseball Ground. The old double act of Ian Wright and Dennis Bergkamp scored the goals. As it happened, Manchester United finished champions with 75 points that season – exactly what Arsenal collected for this fifth-placed finish.
Wenger was candid in accepting responsibility. The storm clouds that accompanied the questions about his future were damaging. http://www.authentickansascityroyals.com/Alex-Gordon-Jersey He said the psychological environment the squad had to deal with at the darkest moments grew “horrendous”. (Which begs the obvious question as to why he and the club were not able to sort out the contract and alleviate some of that pressure.)
Is a season outside the Champions League the end of the world? How critical is it in terms of keeping players whose contracts are winding down, like Alexis Sánchez and Mesut Özil, or attracting shiny new ones? Those conversations are on hold for another week, certainly until after the FA Cup final.
They at least head into a rendezvous with the champions, Chelsea, on the back of some decent form – in beating an Everton side halfway to the beach they picked up a seventh win in eight games. But they have their worries, especially defensively. Laurent Koscielny will curse misjudging a challenge on Enner Valencia. He clattered clumsily through the Everton forward, was sent off and the chance to lead his team out at Wembley in the FA Cup final is scuppered. Gabriel Paulista then overstretched his knee and left the pitch visibly pained.

In happier times it was the Manchester Arena where Sir Alex Ferguson and his players ended up on that sunny day, 18 years ago this week, when they brought the European Cup back to the city for the first time since the 1960s.
They reckon there were upwards of 750,000 people to welcome Manchester United back from Barcelona that day. They hung off lamp-posts and balconies and scaffolding and spires, and there has never been another homecoming quite like it on the city’s streets.
And for the 12,000 who packed inside the arena, it culminated in that moment when Ferguson came through the doors holding the trophy above his head. Alex Galchenyuk Authentic Jersey He was followed by his players and for a brief moment the most successful manager of his generation actually ducked because of the din. “I can’t talk,” he said. And it is difficult to think there has been any other occasion inside this venue when the volume has gone higher.
It’s a great football city, Manchester – a divided one, red and blue – and nobody should be taken in by the myth that United have forgotten where they are from. Yes, it’s become a global club, with Florida owners, a cosmopolitan team and all those camera-clicking tourists, but it is still a local one, too. The accents behind the scenes at Old Trafford, or Carrington on the other side of the M60, are still mostly Mancunian. It is still a club, just like Manchester City, with a deep affinity to its city and people.
It certainly won’t be easy for United to adhere to the mantra of the new mayor, http://www.officialcanadiensauthentic.com/Alexander_Radulov_Jersey Andy Burnham, if going about their business as normal means clearing their minds of Monday’s horrors now the club’s players, staff and management, along with thousands of supporters, have arrived in Stockholm, a city recovering from its own recent devastation, for the Europa League final.
The reminders of what happened in Sweden’s capital can still be seen in Drottninggatan, Stockholm’s main shopping street, in the huge display of thousands of different-coloured adhesive notes bearing messages of love and remembrance on the boarded-up windows of Ahlens, the department store where the hijacked lorry that careered down this street last month, killing five people and injuring many others, came to rest.
Back in Manchester, there had not even been time to choreograph those kinds of tribute as the finalists left for Sweden and José Mourinho took the sensible decision to cancel his pre-match press conference, Authentic Bernie Parent Youth Jersey sparing us the possibility that someone might want the club’s manager to discuss trivialities such as injury news. Football suddenly feels very secondary when, at the time Mourinho was scheduled to speak, thousands of people were gathering for a vigil outside Manchester town hall and, one by one, we were learning more about the people who had died.
By that stage, United’s players had already held their own minute’s silence, standing in a circle with their heads bowed, on the pitches at Carrington. Once they arrived in Stockholm they did visit the Friends Arena to have a look at the stadium where they will play Ajax, passing the place where a statue of Zlatan Ibrahimovic is going up and trying to fix their minds on the job in hand. But it will not be straightforward.
The statement from Mourinho explained the decision to excuse himself from media obligations because of “the effect this has had on everyone here at the club and within our city”. Another release noted that pupils from some of the schools affiliated to the Manchester United Foundation were among the audience at that Ariana Grande concert.
A lot of the players’ Twitter accounts are controlled by their own PR people. Not all of them, though. “Devastating,” was the word Wayne Rooney used. “Much rage, much pain,” David de Gea wrote.
Perhaps Mourinho will try to lift his players by encouraging them to believe they can bring the trophy back to Manchester and dedicate it to the city. Over 90 minutes, http://www.officialflyersteamonline.com/Andrew_Macdonald_Jersey footballers tend to be pretty good at filtering out everything else and, ultimately, it is still a significant occasion in United’s recent history. Hence Mourinho’s comments that “we have a job to do and we will fly to Sweden to do that job”.
Again, though, business as normal is easier said than done right now. The mind goes back to France’s visit to Wembley in November 2015, just a few days after the Paris attacks, and the sapping effect it had on their players. They lost 2-0 and nobody should have been surprised that England’s opponents found it so difficult.
